![]() You can feel it in the writing and voice work, too. These are the kind of details that only come from a truly passionate development team. Every NPC has a distinct sprite animated as cleanly as any of the main cast, too. ![]() ![]() Between levels, there’s a world map to wander with multiple towns, packed with interesting characters that have new things to say after every major plot beat. Every level is visually and mechanically distinct, often with a shift in aesthetic around the mid-way point. It’s easy to see how this took seven years to create. Fast platforming, slow-cooked to perfection While the vanilla experience is excellently tuned, you’re invited to tweak those dials if you feel the need. Or you can start each stage with powerups, bonus lives, or extra powers like health-leeching attacks. Want to race against the dev’s par times or clear stages with a single hit point? Do it. On top of difficulty settings and a range of accessibility options, there are unlockable items that can greatly reduce or increase difficulty in interesting ways. Thankfully, there is a Classic Mode which you can only play through the levels without any cut-scenes or story whatsoever. It’s liberating stuff, and missing a jump can easily be recovered from in style, making FP2 a very forgiving game It wants you to have fun on your own terms. There is a story mode to this game, but sadly the story isn't very good, the writing in this game isn't the most terrible thing out there, but the overly long cut-scenes and so so voice acting makes this story pretty cringe worthy at times, though I have to admit, it does have it's moments but they're few and far between. They all have unique designs and don't look like throw-away cartoon characters you'd see in games like this, I wish I could've said the same about the story. Milla is the weakest one despite having the ability to dig and fly for a few seconds, but I can think of it as the hard mode of this game if I wanted a bit more challenge for me second run. Lilac is the fast one and can pull off few impressive acrobatic moves, Carol is slower, but she can wall jump and use her motorcycle throughout the level if you find the fuel canister. You can play as 3 characters in this game, Lilac, Carol and Milla (which you can unlock later in the game), each and everyone of them has unique mechanics and abilities that can help you traverse the levels. Also, in each level there is a "Yin-Yang" symbol hidden where if you collect it, you'd play a little mini-game where you can either start the next level with a power-up or a have an extra life. Also the enemies won't be able to hurt you unless they try to attack you, so you can run past them without taking any damage. There are also a lot of shield power-ups like in Sonic 3 and even an invincibility power-up that you can find in some levels. The boss fights in this game are one of the best I've had in a 2D platfroming game, there are a lot of strategy involved in them and in return is makes for a fun experience. ![]() ![]() These differences actually helped the developers make more varied and complex enemies to deal with than Sonic and better yet, more compelling boss fights. This makes Freedom Planet a tad more action oriented that Sonic but it doesn't detract from the excellent platforming in any way. And the second difference is that you have a lot more moves you can use to kill enemies and there is a power meter that you'll drain if you used certain attack moves, you can even have a more powerful charging attack that drains the entire meter. The first is it does have an actual health bar instead of just losing the rings. What makes this game different from Sonic the Hedgehog is two major things. Though the game also is riddled with great platforming challenges that hit this sweet middle ground where it's not overly challenging but not a cake-walk either,it has a difficulty curve that you have to ascend in order to master this game. The gameplay of Freedom Planet heavily borrows from Sonic the Hedgehog, and but that I mean it's a platform game where you can go incredibly fast in one direction. ![]()
